Best Kept Village Competition

Yarnfield came third in the group of large villages in the Stafford area. Also we were judged at the District and County levels of the competition which means that the village was one the ten finalists.

Many thanks to all those villagers who  helped by doing those extra jobs like mowing a piece of grass near their property and for  keeping the village tidy by picking up litter. We hope that we can keep the village litter free at other times of the year too so that it becomes the norm for our village to be litter free. We would like to make a special plea to parents to encourage their children to bin their litter.

A growing number of villagers displayed containers of flowers outside their properties; and there were some really lovely displays. Thank you all for your efforts. Our thanks also to the fête organisers who allocated £200 to be spent on perennials in various areas of the village. These have now been planted  to give all - year round interest, as well as in readiness for next year's competition.

  Defibrillator

Our thanks to Councillor Henry Butter and the Staffordshire Community Fund, and Swynnerton Parish Council. Between them they have funded a defibrillator cabinet. This will be sited on an external wall of  the village hall where it will be available 24.7.365. When sited, the cabinet can only be opened by members of the public with an access code given by the emergency services via a 999 call. Our thanks to Stone First Responders who are lending us a defibrillator. The more people who know how to use the defibrillator the more chance there is that you and your community can be safe. We hope that more villagers will come forward for training on how to use the defibrillator – it is really easy! If you are interested in  joining  the next training session or want more information please ring 760818.

Meanwhile the Forum is applying for funding for the village's own defibrillator. We are also keen to set up a Yarnfield First Responder Group, a team of trained villagers  available 24/7 to respond to victims suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. If you are interested in joining a team or if you are already trained please contact the above number.

 New seats for village green

Funding has been sought from Swynnerton Parish Council for a new bench to go on the village green. This bench should be sited shortly. Further funding has been sought for a third bench from Councillor Henry Butter and the Staffordshire Community Fund. We hope that these will enable villagers to be able to relax and enjoy different views of the green. Our thanks to both of these for their support in improving our village.

Buddies in Bereavement (BIBs)

If you are bereaved, retired, lonely, or are looking for like-minded people to enjoy some social activities, then why not join BIBs on MONDAY 17th OCTOBER 2011 at the UPPER HOUSE, BARLASTON at 10.00am.

There will be a very informal meeting where people can meet, make friends, discuss and plan activities based on people's interests. The event is funded by West Midlands Strategic Health Authority and managed by Tender Care Partnership Training and it is hoped that there will be enough interest to take this community group forwards.

So, why not go along and join in. The event is FREE and you will receive a warm welcome along with Danish pastries, cakes, coffee and tea.

 Skate Park and Dance Mats

This summer 40 children thoroughly enjoyed the visit of Stafford Borough Council's Skate Park. Unfortunately the skate park will not be coming to the village during this half term holiday or during the February half term. However, there will be a skate park available at these times at  the Sports Barn in Stone. We are trying to arrange for a Dance Mats session to come to the village over the February half term. Look out for more information nearer the date.

  Identified Flying Objects!

The current golf craze on the village green is causing considerable concern.

Parish Councillor, Brian Eyre, has distributed air balls to the younger children to lessen the hazard to residents and their property. He is also arranging for a golf professional to give a talk and a golf  lesson to encourage the children  to play safely and reponsibly. However, older youngsters seem unconcerned about the genuine dangers they are posing to residents and their property despite the fact that their golf balls have narrowly missed residents, cars and homes. A number of residents have recovered golf balls from their gardens: one of which had hit a parked car. We would like to draw parents' attention to the seriousness of this issue. Besides the obvious dangers, if a resident is hit or property damaged, then parents could find themselves having to pay a considerable bill.

 Himalayan Balsam

During the summer the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers spent three days removing this invasive weed from the banks and waters of the stream. This weed overruns huge areas destroying native plants. We will monitor the situation to try to ensure that this weed remains controlled.

  Children's Play Area

In August we complained  to our MP, Bill Cash, and to the Chief Executive of Stafford Borough Council to draw their attention to the unwillingness of Stafford Borough Council 's Leisure Department to spend the

outstanding  Section 106 Agreement money on the children's play area now rather than wait until the development of the BT site. After their intervention we have been told that the money can be spent now. At Swynnerton Parish Council's next meeting at Swynnerton Village Hall the Parish Council and our Borough Councillors will be discussing this issue.

 SaRH Customer Initiative Bid

Yarnfield Forum has been successful in this year's round. Funding from Stafford and Rural Homes Customer Initiative Bid 2011 will pay to replace the single - glazed windows and the wooden sections below the windows in the flats on Greenside with double glazed units.

During the summer the Forum consulted with residents in Greenside and Meece Road to establish if there was an important improvement that we could bid for. Our thanks to those residents who took part and for their time in giving information - all of which ensured the bid was successful.
